How We Review & Rate

Our method in plain terms — what we test ourselves, and what we assess from evidence.

By the BonusWithoutDeposit editorial team · Last updated July 2026 · Online since 2006

Transparency is the whole point of a review. So here is exactly how we form the opinions on this site — including the parts we test ourselves and the parts we assess from external evidence. We'd rather tell you our method than pretend we've personally deposited at every casino.

Two tracks: games and casinos

We review two different things in two different ways, because they call for different evidence.

Slots & games — tested in demo

We play the slots we write about in free demo mode: how the features trigger, how the base game feels, bonus frequency, volatility in practice. Our screenshots are our own. This is first-hand experience, and it's the basis of our game reviews.

Casinos — assessed on licence + aggregated reputation

We do not claim to have deposited at every casino. Instead we assess each one on its licence and on reputation aggregated from the main independent sources (Trustpilot, Casino Guru, AskGamblers), which we cite — and we add our own conservative editorial verdict. Those external scores are shown as context, not presented as our own rating.

What we weigh

  • Licence & safety

Who regulates the site, whether funds are protected and whether you have any route to complain.

  • Bonus terms

Wagering requirement, max cashout on no-deposit wins, eligible games and time limits — the fine print that decides real value.

  • Payouts

Withdrawal speed, limits and documented history of paying (or not paying) players.

  • Reputation

Aggregated, cited scores and complaint history from independent player communities.

  • Games

Range and quality of software, and whether demo play is available.

  • Support

Availability and quality of customer help when something goes wrong.

How the licence shapes our advice

The single biggest factor in what we recommend is the licence, because it decides whether you have any protection:

  • Strongly licensed (e.g. UKGC, Malta) — audited games, segregated funds, a regulator to appeal to. Fine to play with an entertainment budget. Always 18+.
  • Offshore / weak licence (e.g. Curaçao) — fewer guarantees. Treat the free bonus as the safe test; if you deposit, keep it small and read the terms.
  • No recognised licence / roguetake the free bonus if you like, but don't deposit. For real-money play, choose a licensed site.
Ratings and commissions

Some casino links on this site are affiliate links. Commission never affects our ratings or which offers we list. A weak casino gets a low score whether or not there's a commission attached. See our Affiliate Disclosure.

Keeping things current

Bonus terms and programmes change. We re-check offers periodically, remove casinos that close or that we no longer consider trustworthy, and date every page. If you spot something out of date, tell us via our contact page.

Do you test every casino yourselves?
No, and we say so plainly. We test games in demo mode first-hand; we assess casinos on their licence and on aggregated, cited player reputation, plus our own conservative verdict.
Can you win real money with a no-deposit bonus?
Sometimes, but there's almost always a wagering requirement and a low max cashout. We list those terms so you can see the realistic outcome before you claim.
Does a commission change your rating?
No. Commission has no effect on scores or rankings. We rank offers on their real terms.
